JOHN 19:25-27

What an incredible scene, what an incredible man! Even through the unimaginable pain of crucifixion, Jesus was still able to not only speak, but to ensure the future of Mary, his mother, in a sense ‘handing her over’ to John for him to care for her; ‘Here is your mother’.

Surely this is the ultimate expression of the fifth commandment, honour your father and mother. Even in death, Jesus was speaking life to his mother. It gives us a very balanced and beautiful picture of family here. Whereas we tend to separate our physical and spiritual family in terms of our priorities in life, here Jesus merges the two, with the spiritual family responsible for the physical. Often in ministry we neglect our physical family, sacrificed at the altar of our ‘calling’. Take time to think about this. Are you neglecting your family at the moment, perhaps a small gesture is necessary now to assure them of your love?
