MATTHEW 27:31-43, MARK 15:20-32, LUKE 23:26-38, JOHN 19:16-24

The very worst news, before the very best news. Jesus had to go through the worst possible ordeal – the worst anyone has ever had to endure because of both physical and spiritual pain – in order for us to experience absolute freedom and a new world of hope. The mind boggles, but we can take lessons from this.

A dentist is a necessary evil, or the knife of a surgeon, or even just having to endure a written exam. All are ordeals with beneficial outcomes (though not always). It is worth thinking about Jesus on that bleak Good Friday when we sit in anticipation of our challenges and remember that ours is a drop in the ocean by comparison, but also that, because of his ordeal, whatever our outcomes are, the promises of salvation and eternal life outweigh everything.
