MATTHEW 26:30-56, MARK 14:26-52, LUKE 22:31-53, JOHN 18:1-11
The episode in the garden is so important that it is covered extensively in all four gospels. It shows Jesus stripped down emotionally and gives us a view of the burdens that he carried for us. ‘My Father if it is possible … yet but as you will.’ It’s almost as if we see the human and divine in a single sentence. The anguish of anticipation, then the certainty of his mission.
This is a one-off event. We can’t possibly have an understanding of what he went through, but we can learn from his example. We sometimes know that there is something that we ought to do … something painful or embarrassing perhaps. Perhaps this is a nudge to encourage us … to do it!
