Ep. 51: Demands and consequences
His ministry in that Gentile district was about to draw to a close.
Ep. 50: The Sabbath
The Jerusalem Scribes, who had been relentlessly stalking Jesus, had been away celebrating the Passover during the recent healings.
Ep. 48: The Deaf and mute man
This miracle meant that Jesus would get no rest as the fame of the healing spread.
Ep. 47: The Canaanite woman
Jesus needed a break. Too many discussions and opposing voices, disappointments and defections.
Ep. 46: Parting of the ways
Those who had wanted to take Jesus by force and make him their Messiah-King now caught up with him.
Ep. 45: Traditions of the Elders
Let’s recap. Jesus and his disciples left Capernaum for Bethsaida on a Thursday and the miraculous feeding of the multitude took place that evening, followed by the passage of the disciples to the other side of the lake and him walking on the waters, in the night of Thursday to Friday.
Ep. 44: Walking on water
An irresistible impulse seized the people. They would proclaim him King, then and there.
Ep. 43: The Feeding of the 5000
Jesus and his disciples needed to get away from Capernaum and rest
Ep. 42: The death of John
In these circumstances, we empathise with John’s disciples, as months of this weary captivity pass.
Ep. 40: New Wine
The scene has changed and the Baptist has become the prisoner of Herod Antipas.
Ep. 39: I must become less
Meanwhile, having sent his disciples off on their mission trip, Jesus himself taught and preached for a short time in the towns around Capernaum.
Ep. 38: Sent out
From now on he will begin to send out his disciples to spread the Gospel, to share his task and mission.
Ep. 37: Prophet without honour
So Jesus left Capernaum and from this time onwards it ceases to be the centre of his activity and is only occasionally visited.
Ep. 36: Miracles of faith
There seems remarkable similarity between the two miracles of Jesus on leaving Capernaum and those which he did on his return.
Ep. 35: The demoniac at Gerasa
That day of wonders was not yet ended. We suppose the Saviour and his disciples to have landed on the other side of the lake late in the evening. All the circumstances lead us to regard the healing of the demonised at Gerasa as a night scene, immediately on Christ’s arrival from Capernaum and after the calming of the storm at sea.
Ep. 34: The storm
It was the evening and once more great multitudes were gathering to him. What more will he have to say to those who had heard his teaching in parables that morning? he was desperately tired but his work had to go on.
Ep. 33: Parables
We are once more with Jesus and his disciples by the Lake of Galilee. It is later in winter, perhaps a few weeks before Passover. Jesus had left the house with his disciples and so many people had come to hear him that he had to address them from a boat.
Ep. 32: Beelzebub
But the raising of the dead at Nain put them on full alert and news of this reached the leaders at Jerusalem. There seems just sufficient time between this and the healing of the demonised dumb man for them to witness this significant event.
