For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. The messianic world starts here for news, views and prayer for Israel and a balanced approach to exploring the Hebrew roots of Christianity, for Jew and Gentile.

Read our PLAIN MAN'S GUIDE TO THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT Available on the web and as a printed booklet.

Shalom and welcome to the Saltshakers Messianic Community. First, a little about ourselves. We are a Jew and a Gentile, who have met our Messiah, Jesus (Yeshua) and seek to minister to the whole body of believers, whether you call yourself Messianic or Christian.

We promote a balanced approach to our faith walk and we work towards a non-judgemental, caring and loving witness to both Jew and Gentile, believer and non-believer. Our desire is to reach the following:
  • Gentiles who wish to learn more about the Jewish Roots of Christianity
  • Jews who are curious about the claims of Jesus, the Jewish messiah.
  • All who love Israel and the Jewish people and are looking for reliable information and current news.
Our destiny is in God, our hope is in Jesus, our inspiration is through the Holy Spirit and our guidebook is the Bible, viewed through Hebrew eyes.

   Poetry Corner

Here is a small, but, hopefully, growing, collection of Christian poetry. The only criterion for inclusion is that the poem should reflect love for God and His creation. Poems of a 'messianic' nature are of particular interest for us.

Do you have a good poem? Send it and we'll consider it for inclusion.

What's the point of worrying?

by Isaac

It's now that time of year again, the season of goodwill
When we worship in the shopping malls, when we party until we're ill.
When we sacrifice our future for the heady rush of greed
Spend like there's no tomorrow, there's marketing campaigns to feed.
While churches lay ever emptier, in sad, neglected praise
The reason for the season just vanishes in the haze.
It's hard for us Church people, the world clutches us in its grip
The one whose birth we celebrate, we've slowly let him slip.
What's the point of worrying, the cosy family cry,
Bellies full to bursting on turkey and apple pie
It's a crying shame, reply the Church people,
These folk just don't get it, these folk are gonna die.

The papers are full of doom and gloom, it's the only thing that sells
We like our soap-stars bad and mean, we love public and private hells.
Wars are always far away, brought close in safe wide screen
Sandwiched between the adverts for Pepsi and Windolene.
What is truth, it's hard to tell, everyone claims a piece
Shame we seldom hear the Truth of the only Prince of Peace.
It's hard for us Church people, the world doesn't hear our voice
We do try to reach them, but, hey, they've made their choice.
What's the point of worrying, our TV generation say,
Minds pulped to porridge on Big Brother and all things realité
We take no blame, reply the Church people,
We know the true reality, but these folk go their own way.

Sin abounds all around as we slide down the slippery slope
We're offered countless pleasures and excitements, but absolutely no hope.
We gorge from a menu of sex and drugs, repeated again and again,
Feed the body with sensations, jam weird dreams into your brain.
We try to practice what we preach, but the flesh can show us our lack
When it does it's what the world sees, and our words are just thrown back.
It's hard for us Church people, the world just shuts its ears
We offer them a faith so dear, but they just wallow in their fears.
What's the point of worrying, we 're all just having fun
It really does you no harm, we're not hurting anyone.
We do our best, reply the Church people,
They should follow our saviour's example, these folk don't see the Son.

Scandals still happen, yet reputations remain intact
Standards are so low, still dropping, and that's a solid fact.
Politicians and entertainers just bounce back, shame is not felt
Morals give way to ratings and what's good for the money belt.
And oh if only this was where Church People could show a lead,
But more than often we hear, sorry, but we've got a flock to feed!
It's hard for us Church people, we try and show them what's wrong
We proclaim it from our pulpits, we sing it in heavenly song.
What's the point of worrying, there's no point fussing, too
Who are you to judge us, we see we're no different to you.
Yes, we're weak just like you, reply the Church people,
Just open your ears to our words, close your eyes to what we do.

"Isms" and philosophies, seem to make the world go round
While Islam holds us to ransom, in fear and tightly bound.
So many possibilities, this box of flavours for the soul
"Whatever makes you feel good" as we sample from the bowl.
"All religions lead to God" or "Jesus is the only way",
Please Church People, speak with one voice, what exactly do you say?
It's hard for us Church people, we must always be of open mind
Who are we to force our beliefs - just seek and you'll surely find!
What's the point of worrying, surely sincerity is our goal
What's in the heart is what matters, it's how we fill the hole
It's up to you really, reply the Church people,
Have mercy on their soul, oh Lord, have mercy on their soul.

Living in sin, how dated, how passé, everyone's doing it now,
We're 21st century people, you know, liberated from rites and vow.
No point in marriage these days, the cost and so restricting, too!
We've moved on from outdated traditions, we just do … what we do!
And anyway, Church people, you seem to be following our way,
Divorce, for some of you, now accepted, whatever your Bible may say!
It's hard for us Church people, in getting the balance just right
To be "in" the world, but not "of" is hard, sometimes we just lose sight.
What's the point of worrying, surely all you need is love
It's just how we live our lives, it just fits us like a big glove
It's your life to live, reply the Church people,
May the Lord forgive them, may they find mercy from God above.

Greed abounds wherever you look, power in the hands of the few
While dark strangers far away starve, we haggle in the market queue
Corporations plunder the environment, profiting from pollution
While governments shrug, it's "laissez faire", money's the only solution.
What's your answer, people of the Church, speak out against this sin
Or, like us, do you see it as just spitting against the wind.
It's hard for us Church people, how can we make a real difference
We can pray, I suppose, but the task is so huge, how can we go on the offence.
What's the point of worrying, is there anyone out there with a care
The strong will always exploit us, the weak will always be there
Sadly that's so, reply the Church people,
We must look at the return of the Lord, when all will be made true and fair
.

It takes a special type to make a leader, these days we tend to find
They don't rise to the top of the pile through a heart that's tender and kind.
We trust them with our money, we trust them with our life
Yet they're just the political form of a mugger with a knife.
We look to you Church people, what's the quality of your leadership
Do we see humble servants or empire builders with an iron grip?
It's hard for us Church people, our leaders can still follow the flesh
But at least we forgive them and offer them a new start afresh.
What's the point of worrying, we get the leaders we deserve
It takes a will so strong, a lot of front, confidence and nerve
It's a sad situation, reply the Church people,
The blind leading the blind, just who do they really serve?

Wherever you look around, you see hatred and anger in constant growth
The seven sins spilling over into rivers of brotherly loathe.
Nation against nation, race against race, also families and faiths at war
We're just not programmed to get on, to fight seems what we're made for.
History shows you're not immune, Church people, how have you coped?
Have you learned to agree to disagree, has it gone as you'd once surely hoped?
It's hard for us Church people, so many traditions to hold together
You just don't know how hard it is just getting on with each other.
What's the point of worrying, human nature we just have to put up with
And do our best, where we can, to just live and let live
It's so terribly tragic, reply the Church people,
They're going to reap, one day, whatever they give
.

Who do you really worship said the actress to the minister?
There's so much now on offer thanks to TV and mass media.
From the worlds of sports, film and music, we bow down at their feet
We buy all they put their name to, to keep our modern gods sweet.
Church people, do you have your idols, alongside the One you serve Lesser distractions maybe, that you worship with lesser verve?
It's hard for us Church people, keeping our eyes on the one we love
When the world pulls us this way and that, when push gives way to shove.
What's the point of worrying, we worship whoever we will?
Our lives are our own to do what we please, whether for good or for ill.
They just don't see it, reply the Church people,
An impossible job, it's like running up a hill.

And they call it the game of life but there's no laughter when
That fateful day arrives, the day of reckoning for men.
When, in a wink of the eye, the cosmos holds its breathe
And all, from old to young, learn the true meaning of death.
Church people, why on earth didn't you warn us, that the end would truly come?
Is this really him, we see in the sky, the one who has struck us dumb?
It was hard for us Church people, preaching when none of you would hear.
If you didn't listen, who's fault was it then, a church was always near?
What's the point of worrying, we can now see our destination?
Far from the love of the God we never knew, all we see is tribulation.
We did our best for them, declared the Church people
But our best, it seems, was not enough, so why the accusation?

So we reach that point in history, the parting of the ways,
Some are going heavenly, the others to hell in a daze.
Yet the debate continues, voices growing weaker, in a trance
"Why did you never warn us", cry the masses, "you never gave us a chance?"
Church people, before you disappear to your heavenly eternal reward, Please just answer us, if you warned us, how come we never heard?
But we did, you knew where we were, shouted the Church people
But you always were too busy ignoring us, never shaken, hardly stirred.
What's the point of worrying, too late after our terrible mistake?
Condemned to eternity, because of decisions we didn't make.
What else could we do, asked the Church saints?
You could have tried harder, replied God, weeping for his people's sake.

God Sent Friends

by Claire Bloomfield

Father Thank you so much
For the Friends You’ve Given Me
How in Every Situation
They Understand Perfectly
They don’t ask Any Questions
I’m Accepted as I Am
Just as Myself
Completely Loved
And Seen as In Your Hands
True Friends Such as Jo
Do Not ask The World Of Me
Nor What I Can Give Them
Or if I will Ever Be
Whole in the Physical Sense
On Earth For All To See
I’ve No Need
To Put A Face On
For Someone Like Jo
You See
Because She is
Able to See Through
Any Facade
To the REAL ME
I’m Grateful for
Such A Friend
I Don’t Need to Plead
God Sent Friends
Will Still Be There
When The Rest have
Gone to Seed

If ...

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

If I could only give you a smile unknowing of where to this world of ours is going.
If I could only give you one foolish grin happy and without the knowledge of sin.
If only I could take away that scowl caused by the sight of human traits foul.
If only I could stop that gloom never ending from too much, or too little understanding.
And if I could give you a glimpse of gladness And if I could only stamp out your sadness.
But you must ask of Him that lives, Who said, "I do not give to you as the world gives."
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you"
And He said, what neither friend could say, nor sage, "I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

One Messiah

by Marilyn K Hulley

One Star dancing in the shepherds sky,
One babies cry in the dead of night,
One teardrop from His Jewish mothers' eye,
One drop of blood from this one Jewish Boy,
One day lost in His Fathers business,
One day done as the carpenters son,
One tender plant a Root out of dry ground,
One day a man Thee Son of David Gods only Son,
One Lamb immersed in the Jordan Sea,
One Fathers voice "in whom I am well pleased",
One temptation alone in the wilderness,
One more victory for the Son of Man,
One mothers request turned water to wine,
One outstretched hand touched leprous skin,
One spoken word and "thy servant will be healed",
One rebuke and the wind and waves are stilled,
One touch of His finger and eyes were opened,
One stretch, one touch of His Garment, I will be healed,
One prophetic word, "one man should die for all the people",
One kiss, one tree, one death,
One drop of His blood and I shall live, and never die,
One Messiah, One King of the Jews,
One Bright Morning Star lights up in the darkness,
One Star Dancing on the Shepherds hill,
One Messiahs cry in the dead of night,
and all will be still.....

Yeshua

by Claire Bloomfield

When He was Born
There was no Fanfare
No song of a Bird
No excited Throng of People
Only the Ox and Ass Heard
Yeshua was Born to Mary
Of a Virgin Birth
He had no place to call
His own Nowhere on earth
Yeshua grew up and shared
His Life
Tried to make people understand
He was the Prize
He would lead them from
Darkest Night
He would help them win the fight
Find a reason to live a strength of Purpose
a Willingness to Forgive
Yeshua was Crucified
Nailed to a Cross
His Life Blood Flowed from Him
At such Loss
The Tomb was Sealed
They thought He died
He said that after three
Days He would Rise
On the Third Day
as His word says
He Rose
Now Yeshua (Jesus)
Lives to intercede for those
Who call upon His Name
Without Doubt or Fear
Knowing that in Prayer
He is ever near
If you have Trial
Grief or Despair
Call upon Yeshua
Know He Longs to meet
you there

Blessings and Curses

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

The Spirit of God came upon him and he uttered his oracle:
. ."May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!" (Num 24:1-3)

It is all known, though left unsaid:
An empty house, an empty bed,
Though people live in there and sleep;
They know, it was not for them to keep.

It is all known, though left untold:
A spice box of silver, a ring made of gold,
Though no one heard a soldier's ‘Raus'
Still, someone took away your house.

And we all know it, though can't confess
that, you, Israel, we did not bless;
that hate we've used to hide the sin,
Of coveting your house and all therein.

Abba (Daddy)

by Claire Bloomfield

Father God we Know Your Love
It is so Good And True
Lord there is Nothing
In the World
That we can Hide from you
You know each Thought we have
You know our every need
Lord if only we will ask
You will our Spirits feed
You know our deepest thoughts
You know the Prayers we Pray
In fact before we come to you
You know just what we’ll say
Father It’s so good to Know
A God who understands
Who weaves the fabric of our Lives
And undergirdes the Plans
Who know each situation
From Beginning to it’s End
Who Most importantly of all
Is our Saviour Lord And Friend

RACE

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

For ouch
is the wages of sin
in this race which
we try hard to win

we run
and we stumble and fall
we scrape our knees
and then bawl

but some day
we'll be running for real
neither toddle
nor stumble nor reel

with long paces
we'll run
we will do it
for fun

wholly perfect
and sound
without touching
the ground

we will run
for it
truly one
in the Spirit

we'll run
through trails untrod
we'll run
for the Glory
of God

God’s Best

by Claire Bloomfield

Father Thank You for the way You Care For Me
In Every circumstance your Will I See
You Only Have the Best In Store For Me
I Love You So
Thank You for the Friends You’ve Given
How In Their Care
Your Healing Comes to Me
For giving me a sense of Worth You See
My Heart You Know
Father when tossed by Waves
Of Uncertainty
Help me Forever your face to see
Even when Clouds surround Me
Your Will To Know
“Baggage”
Father You Know all I Feel
And everything I Do
You Know in My Life
I Totally Rely On You
For food To Eat
And Clothes to Wear
Your Word Promises I won’t Need to
Have a Care
Father I need You
With Me every Day
I Rely on You for Words to Say
You Know the Situation I’m In
I have to Trust You Lord for Everything
Thank you That You Keep Me
Safe And Sure
Even On My Own
I am Secure
In the Knowledge of your Love
And Complete Care
Your Words Promises
You Count My every Hair
Even Little Sparrows to the
Ground do Not Fall
Without you Hear their
Faintest Call
So Lord I trust Myself
Into your Care
Place All Burdens
At Your Cross
And Leave them There

Miriam

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

They call you blessed among women, and I
Keep thinking, Miriam, why?

Is it the blessing of joy so pure
that only motherhood can give? But sure,
each mom would say she knows this bliss
of giving her baby a loving kiss.
Is it because you agreed
to do God's will? But then indeed
He blesses all who obey,
observe His Law and follow His way.

But maybe, Miram, I have guessed
the special way in which God blessed
your special life: for when your love grew deep and strong
that all other mothers could nothing but long
to love like you did; then you could kneel
at the cross and feel
all of your love, and yet receive
the Love that you, Miriam, could never give.

Little worm, little worm, where are you creeping? (For children)

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

"`Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel for I myself will help you,' declares the LORD" (Isaiah 41:14)

Little worm, little worm, where are you creeping?
I am creeping to my Hiding while the bird is sleeping.

Little worm, little worm, where are you hidden?
I am hidden in my Crevice, where no is foe bidden.

Little worm, little worm, where is this Nook?
Every-Time, Every-where, you just have to look.

Little worm, little worm, don't you ever fear?
All the time, but I trust that my Helper's near.

(May, 1997)

How can I praise you, Oh LORD?

by Maja Wagner-Nawrocka

"Praise the LORD, O my soul." (Psalm 103 :1)

How can I praise you, Oh LORD?
Could I say that:
"Blessed art thou, Oh LORD our God,
King of the Universe who created the cat -
who slips into the house in the morning,
who eats and sleeps and practices yawning"?

How can I praise you, Oh LORD?
Could I say, better still--
"Blessed art thou Oh LORD our God,
King of the Universe, who created dill
that's gathered together in a delicate bunch,
that smells so fresh in a summer's lunch"?

How can I praise you, Oh LORD?
Could I praise you then,
"Blessed art thou, Oh LORD our God,
King of the Universe, who gave us the pen
the useful tool that let's me write to my hubby:
‘Lunch's in the fridge. I love you. (And I've fed the tabby)'"?

Lord May We Know
You’ve Given This Love
So Your Presence May Flow
From The People You
Put Together
To Glorify Your Son
Now And Forever

THE TRUE LIGHT

by Michael Chirimuta

Darkness sways to the devil' tune,
Oblivious of the Light of life
Sent to free darkness
From the devil's grip.

The Light shines in the darkness,
And the darkness comprehends it not.
The true Light lights every man
That comes into the world.

The glowing Light
Attacks the dark cloud
Where satan's orchestra
Plays their profane tune.

In the darkness the devil prowls
and roars like a lion,
Knowing his time is limited,
Pending execution of the judgement written.

The true lion is
The Lion of Judah,
King of kings, Jesus Christ,
Sent to redeem the lost.

"For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

lEARning to listen

by Stephen G. McLeod

“He who has ears to hear,
let him hear.”
-Rabbi Yeshua of Nazaret

“Listen with your ears.”
-Rabbi Noah Weinberg

At the beginning of this yEAR,
teach me to listen;
teach me to hEAR.

Teach me to listen to the Torah of your creation
so that i may hEAR the songs of birds,
the rustling of leaves,
the dripping of rain,
the stirring of wind,
and sounds that i have never hEARd before.

Teach me to listen to others.
Before i argue,
before i ask a question,
before i interrupt,
teach me to listen;
teach me to hEAR.

Teach me to listen to the words.
Teach me to listen to the silence
between the words
so that i may hEAR the emotion
as well as the thought,
so that i my hEAR the intent of the hEARt
as well as the statement of the mind.
Teach me to listen.

Teach me to listen to you
so that i may hEAR you
and know that you are nEAR.
Teach me to hEAR.

True Happiness

by Claire Bloomfield

True Happiness Is Priceless
It can Never Be Sold
It’s Worth More Than Silver
More Precious Than Gold
It Cannot be Traded For any kind of Fee
Nor Exchanged Daily for the Price of Tea
It Cannot be Measured through Circumstance
Or the Things We May Do
And Yet it Costs Nothing
It’s Available Freely to YOU True Happiness Comes from Yeshua
When We Receive His Gift From Above
The Light Of His Presence
The Glory Of His Love
It Comes in The Friendship He Offers

It Comes from the Joy That He Brings
It Comes when We See His Goodness
In The Most Common Things
The Beauty Of Creation
The Joy of Seeing A Flower
Of Knowing That God Our Father
Has These Things in His Power
Yeshua, Please Show us Open Our Eyes To See
Evidence of Your Handiwork
Everywhere We May Be
That We May Share with Others
The Gift Of Heaven Above
The Joy Of Your Indwelling
The Beauty Of Your Love

God’s Love

by Claire Bloomfield

God’s Love is Unconditional
Not Dependent on Our Sin
The State of our Emotions
or our Life when we Begin
God’s Love Sent His Son Jesus
To Die upon A Cross
Overlooking Anguish
or the terrible Pain of Loss
God’s Love made Sacrifice possible
only so we’d be
Perfect in His Sight
And through Jesus now set Free
Jesus Sacrifice is that which
was Prophesied of Old
Christ went through The Curtain
So that we may now be Bold
To come to Jesus Humbly
Completely as we are
So He can give us wholeness
from each and every Scar
So Accept the Gift He Offers
so that you always can know
The covering of His Blood
and it’s Life Giving flow
Do not ignore this pleading
It is Life or Death you see
And Jesus is the only
way to know true Liberty
The way of Life is Narrow
hard to negotiate, but
the Alternative is Hell
And no-one deserves this Fate

“Why”

by Claire Bloomfield

There are questions in Life
that cannot be denied
It’s not always possible
from hardship to hide
When troubles upon us
are too hard to bear
We must come to the Father
with Him to share
Our Lord does not promise
that our Life will be
a smooth bed of Roses
for Eternity
God Promises only to know when we fall
and when trouble is waiting at our door to call
At times such as these we must not lose the plot
Not ask so much why but I fact why not
Our father has promised to not hide His Face
In weakness we’re strong
by the power of His Grace

I Love You

by Claire Broomfield

Father God I Love You so much
I’m grateful in my Life for your Healing Touch
I know I’m not worthy
Your Love to command
But I can’t cope with Life
without holding your Hand
I have not done anything
worthy of Praise
or Recommendation
All of my Days
But you offered
without coercion or cost
Your Love
when you took all
My Sin on the Cross
We all are unworthy
Your Love to receive
But all that you ask of us
is to Believe
We demand your attention
even your care
We even give you our Burdens to Share
We would soon become tired and worn
If given these problems when we were born
But you Lord never turn your face away
But constantly Listen to us when we Pray

God

by Claire Bloomfield

Lord you are Holy
Majestic King of All
Yet you love someone Like me
It makes no sense at all
You saw me in the Womb
You planned my Life to be
Created in your image
However can that be?
My Child I love you Dearly
Though I knew from the start
Your Heart it is Deceitful
I had to take my part
I sent my Dear Son Jesus
He only could reach the Goal
And take your Sin upon Himself
to make you fully Whole
Through His Blood there’s Cleansing
Not based on what you’ve done
You are made Worthy
Completely Worthy
Through the Sacrifice of my Son

The Cottage

by Claire Bloomfield

I have a Picture
A Cottage by a Stream
It has Roses round the Door
Oh it looks such a Dream
The Cottage is deserted
in a state of disrepair
The Person that indwelt it once
Became too old and tired to care
It makes me sad to see the Cottage
As it is today
Knowing how it once was in it’s
Brightest day
I have the key to the Cottage
I’m the only one
who can fill the rooms with Laughter
Make the Floorboards creak with fun
Do you know who I am yet?
Is it not Plain to see
I am The Holy Spirit
Come let me set you free

Susan

by Claire Bloomfield

Susan was a pretty Girl
With Shoulder Length Blond Hair
Bright and Vivacious
She didn’t have a care
Susan was all I wanted to be
And wasn’t at the time
She helped me see I had a Life
I wasn’t Just Marking Time
I thank The Lord for Susan
Though she is now set free
She was never Real -
Only imaginary for me
To cure a sense of Loneliness
But now I am so Glad
I need Susan no Longer
Cause by God’s Strength I Stand

Israel

by Claire Bloomfield

Once we were not a people included in God’s plan
Through disobedience we were destined to suffer
His Wrath and Shame
So often we think that we make the choice
But Our Saviour ordains through Grace
that we respond to His Voice
Sometimes it takes us a while
to recognise the Leading of the Lord
Because we fail to comprehend the vision
of His word
We know we are joined to the Olive Tree
And The Tree is Yeshua Our Lord
But we fail to know the Root is Israel
The original People on whom God’s
Grace and Love were outpoured
So often when Jews meet Yeshua
They are encouraged by Gentiles to forget
But firstly God Poured His Grace upon them
Which they then chose to reject
This was no accident at all
It was part of God’s Glorious Plan
Because Israel’s eyes were Blinded
Gentiles were Grafted in
We owe a Debt of Gratitude
to Jewish People Everywhere
Because if this had not been so
Gentiles would be unable to share
In this Glorious inheritance
which is ours through God’s
Marvellous Grace and Love
When Jews Accept Yeshua
We are all made complete
through the Life Giving power
of His Blood
